Also known as Wafer Ash, or Ptelea trifoliata, the Eastern Hoptree grows to a tree or shrub with a dense, rounded crown. It is adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions. Use as an informal hedge or screen. If grown in full sun and cut back, wafer ash will be quite bushy.
All parts are aromatic. Sweet nectar of this plant attracts many species of butterflies. Carrion flies pollinate its flowers. The name Hoptree refers to its bitter fruit which was used as a substitute for hops in brewing beer.
The plant is 2-3' in a 1-2gal pot.
