Baltimore Weed Warriors 

Baltimore Weed Warriors is a city-wide program focused on keeping our urban forests and natural areas healthy through the management of invasive plant species by environmental stewards. The Baltimore Weed Warrior program is an education and advanced capacity building training program for volunteer park stewards. Certified Baltimore Weed Warriors are volunteers and advocates that are trained on basic conservation practices and permitted to work and lead invasive vegetation removal projects in parks without the supervision of park personnel.

Baltimore Weed Warriors have 3 main commitments:

  1. Volunteer
    • Remove invasive plants in parks and other green spaces (as individuals and community leaders)
    • Plant and Restore native vegetation
  2. Advocate for healthy forests and education others about invasive plants
  3. Project Reporting and Management
    • Report removal project data
    • Help track distribution through observational reports (MAEDN)
    • Monitor long term adopted project sites

Certification Requirements:   

  • Participation in the 3 part class training seriesClass curriculum includes: urban forest and invasive plant ecology, species identification, invasive plant impacts on Baltimore’s urban ecosystem, removal methods, project tracking and monitoring, management strategies, leadership and advocacy training.
  • Participation in a group invasive vegetation removal project.
  • Certified Weed Warriors receive a certification card, t-shirt and invasive vegetation identification guide and curriculum resources.
  • To maintain certification, Weed Warriors must participate in at least one removal project or event each year and submit online project reports to the Forestry Division.

WW101: Invasive Plants and Urban Ecosystems – Wed. September 6th 6:00 – 8:30 pm
WW102: Species Identification and Removal Techniques – Sat. September 9th 10:00 am -1:00 pm
WW201: Project Management and Leadership – Sat. September 23rd 10:00 am -1:00 pm

All classes will be held at Rita Church Community Center in Clifton Park, Baltimore MD
